ABOUT DAV:
Over a century ago, more than 200,000 injured service members returned home to America from World War I to a country ill-prepared to meet their needs. Thousands of veterans were without jobs or proper medical care, and their conditions were exacerbated by a global influenza pandemic and brutal postwar economy. On Christmas Day in 1919, a group of veterans met at a Cincinnati hotel for camaraderie. Organized by Judge Robert S. Marx, this Christmas party became a turning point in the history of America's treatment of veterans. "We had a common experience which bound us together," Marx said. "And we ought to continue through an organization of our own - an organization of us, by us and for us.”
The organization grew to meet the needs of veterans and their families. Now, more than a century later, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) continues to advocate and support veterans through a range of no- cost programs and services. Over one million veterans and their families are assisted by DAV each year.
