Commander in Chief Cocktails

Presidents Day is upon us once again, and what better way to celebrate the men who helped shape this country (and the long weekend) than with these HDC Commander in Chief themed cocktails?

HDC McKinley's Delight

Historians suggest our 25th President William McKinley wasn't a heavy drinker like some of his predecessors, however his staff did create a cocktail that was to be a staple of his 1896 election campaign. "McKinley's Delight" has all the makings of a pre-1900's presidential cocktail with Rye Whiskey, vermouth, cherry liqueur and a dash of absinthe. We've made our own modern take on McKinley's Delight thats perfect for the Rye lover to enjoy over the weekend.

3 oz HDC Elk Rider Rye
1.5 oz Owl's Brew Classic
1 oz Grenadine

Add ingredients into a cocktail glass with ice. Stir and top with your favorite bitters and a cherry that would make George Washington proud.

HDC Teddy's Morning Joe

Our 26th President Teddy Roosevelt was no stranger to cocktails. He would often use Mint Juleps to lure his staff out to the tennis court on hot summer days. Teddy also suffered from severe asthma for which he was prescribed (and no we aren't kidding) extra vacation time, smoking cigars, coffee and whiskey. Where can I find that doctor? In honor of Teddy Roosevelt and his coffee being known for having up to 11 cubes of sugar we prescribe to you "Teddy's Morning Joe". May it help you recover from many an ill morning.

1 oz HDC Coffee Vodka
1 oz HDC Elk Rider Blended Whiskey
3/4 oz Half & Half
3/4 oz Grenadine

Pour ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a tumbler with fresh ice. Enjoy!

HDC Coolidge Cooler

Perhaps you are somewhere sunny and warm for the long weekend? Dont worry because our 30th president Calvin Coolidge has just the thing for you. Well, technically Vermont Spirits created this drink for his birthday, but we think the "Coolidge Cooler" is just the thing to cool you down and pick you up.

1.5 oz HDC Blood Orange Vodka
1 oz HDC Elk Rider Bourbon
2 oz Orange Juice Club Soda

Combine all ingredients except for the club soda in a glass with ice. Stir and top with Club soda.

Herbert Hoover's Good Dry Martini

We round out our list of Presidents Day cocktails with a favorite of Herbert Hoover's. At the age of 80 Hoover picked up a case of pneumonia while attending the inauguration of Dwight D Eisenhower in Washington DC. Refusing medical attention Hoover, a long time fisherman, went down to Key Largo for a fishing trip. While there his condition worsened to the point where he had to be admitted to a nearby Catholic Hospital. The hospital supervisor, Mother Magdalene, visited Hoover and he famously asked her, "Sister can you make a good dry martini?" While we are not doctors and none of us have played one on TV, we think Hoovers Dry Martini may be just the thing you need to kick that cold over the weekend.

2 oz HDC Elk Rider Crisp Gin
1/2 oz Dry Vermouth
Lemon Peel Olives

Combine Elk Rider Crisp Gin and Dry Vermouth in a shaker with ice, shake well and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with lemon peel and olives.
