Lunar New Year

ChineseNewYear1020x1200(2)Today is the Lunar New Years Eve. The start of a several week celebration of family, friends, food and recognizing the start of Spring. Its starts the week before with cleaning out your house to say goodbye to the old year, and hello to the new. Today, New Years Eve, is a night dedicated to family time, eating traditional foods and gifting red envelopes full of money to the children of the family to wish them health, good studies, and luck.

The New Year celebrations last through February 11th, the night of the lantern festival. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes are lit with the hopes of receiving a year of smooth sailing and well wishes for your family.

You will hear, many times through out all of the celebrations, the toast “Gan Bei” which translates to ‘dry glass’ the US equivalent of ‘bottoms up’.

At HDC we have created a delicious Lunar cocktail celebrating the mango, a native fruit to China.
